Remote Support with LogMeIn Step-By-Step

SUMMARY

Step-by-step instructions on how to download, install, and configure LogMeIn to allow remote access and control over your Mac or Windows computer.

BACKGROUND


Prior to 2009, there were only a couple of viable options to access your Macintosh remotely. But in the past year that number is now well past a dozen. One of the options that I recommend to our clients is LogMeIn. My reasons are:
  • The free version is very user-friendly, functional, fast
  • The for-fee version adds file sharing
  • Allows the user to access any of their computers for any Internet-connected computer, on any platform
  • Works on Mac and Windows

HOW TO INSTALL LOGMEIN

1. Open your web browser.

2. Visit http://logmein.com.

3. Near the top Left-hand corner, click the “Create an account” link.

4. In the “Get Started. It’s Quick. It’s Free” window, select the radio button for “I want to access files, applications, and desktops on remote computers”. Then click the Continue button.

5. In the “Create an Account to Start Your Free Trial” window, enter your email, create a password, and select “No” to the question “Do you plan to use LogMeIn for IT support?”. Then click the Continue button.

6. In the “My Computers” window, if you want to be able to remotely access and control the computer you are on, click the “Add this computer” button. The LogMeIn software will start downloading to your computer and will launch the installer automatically.

7. When the LogMeIn installer launches, follow the on-screen instructions to install on your computer.
NOTE: The current installer is just a bit flaky. On most of the installs I have done, it fails on the first install. No problem. Just find the installer file in your downloads folder and double-click to launch it, then run the installer a second time.


HOW TO REMOTELY CONTROL YOUR COMPUTER WITH LOGMEIN

Now that you have LogMeIn installed on your computer, let’s look at how to remotely connect to it.

1. From any computer with an internet connection, open a web browser and visit http://logmein.com.

2. In the Login fields, enter your LogMeIn account email address and password, then click the Log Me In button below it.

3. I the “My Computers” window, locate the computer you wish to control, then click it’s “Remote Control” button.

4. As LogMeIn connects to the remote computer, it will prompt you for a valid user account on the remote computer. Enter your user account name and password for the remote computer.

5. When your account has been authorized by the remote computer, the “Connected to:” window appears. Click the “Remote Control” link.

6. In a moment your remote desktop will appear in the browser window, giving you full remote control.

HOW TO DISCONNECT FROM YOUR LOG ME IN SESSION

1. When you have completed your work on the remote computer, click the “Disconnect” button in the side bar.
