Why We Obsess Over Exceptional

I used to joke about my obsession with being exceptional, stating: "Well, I was the first born male child of a Jewish family. I refused to become a Rabbi. Dropped out of medical school. Lacking either of those titles, the social consequences of not working towards exceptional are too great to tempt!"

But that is only part of the story. The earliest photograph of little Marc is in full cowboy gear–cowboy hat, western shirt, boots, and chrome six-shooters (I'm pretty sure "Lone Ranger" is on the barrel). I was raised on a diet of The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, Hopalong Cassidy, The Rifleman, and Maverick. Fully imprinted with Cowboy Wisdom:

  • Treat everyone with the utmost respect
  • Always do your best - do the right thing, at the right time, in the right way
  • Your word is your bond
  • Not everyone can become rich and famous, but anyone can be a hero.

I still wear Stetson and riding boots, never without my sidearm (though “Glock” has replaced “Lone Ranger”), and ride the largest, most handsome paint gelding in the county. My mission is to earn hero status each day. Not by catching the bad guys, but by corralling roadblocks and leading the charge for effective, intelligent IT management and support for your staff and organization.
